IDTV

Finally, we're off.
Belgacom launched as first in Belgium IDTV, just before the summer. Although I’m not very neutral since part of this project since the beginning, but the new experience IDTV has brought to me a totally different experience. All the leading channels of Belgium, some new theme channels, a perfectly working video-on-demand system, and as of august all the football I could ever have wished.

Some weeks ago, someone asked me: “Will interactive TV change anything? Will it really work ?” Well, yes it will.

And the reason is quite simple: it’s better for everyone:

- the viewer can choose what, how & when he want to watch tv

- the broadcasters get a new impulse to valorize their content and create more than just 1 or 2 formats

- the producers see a multiplication of distribution channels & can create more formats

- more channels means that more creative producers can bring their own “different” channels

- and advertisers get a mix between high branding TV and high impact internet advertising.

Is this a first ? Certainly not. Music downloads changed the entire audio industry (think about the success of iPod worldwide and our own Skynet Music Club in Belgium), online gaming changed the way we entertain & connect, dvd is a pre-packaged digital VOD, digital photography has drastically impacted the number of photos we take and share. And I’m not even talking about email, instant messaging or information sharing.

And it’s all just the start. To say it with the baseline of Skynet: You ain’t seen nothing yet.

iDTV Congrats for beating Telenet ;)

Will iDTV work? It might, as long as we focus on creativity and new challenges/opportunities. Sadly enough not everybody is thinking in the same way .. lot’s of people don’t like changes.
Same thing with advertising. Everybody’s crying iDTV might undermine the industry as a whole .. Yes indeed it just might redraw it. In fact, it shoúld! The introduction of iDTV will force people to think about of the box and be more creative. In fact it might separate active from inert people.
The only thing that’s needed is some visionary people with gatekeeper responsibilities to get the projects started. People who look further than obstacles and short term costs. Let’s hope Bart is not alone ;)

Of toch?

Beloofd!

Ciao.
